Romans 2:13b-15 It is obeying the law that makes us right in his sight. Even Gentiles, who do not have God’s written law, show that they know his law when they instinctively obey it, even without having heard it. They demonstrate that God’s law is written in their heart, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing right. NLT

God has put a moral code in our hearts: to be right with God, we must do what is right. We don’t always do what is right, and so we try harder to live morally. But even our own consciences tell us that no matter how hard we try, it is not enough. We must do right to be made right in God’s eyes, but we can’t obey perfectly enough to achieve a right standing with God. Our own consciences tell us this, and God’s Word confirms this in the next chapter.

Romans 3:20 For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are. NLT

Instead of making us right with God, trying to obey God’s laws just frustratingly points out that we don’t actually obey God’s laws. All we can really do is cry out to God for mercy. God is a savior and loves to rescue, and here is how he does it:

Romans 3:24-25a Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. NLT
