Genesis 3:8-9  Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.  But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”

Jesus invites us to follow him, to be his disciples, his students.  As followers, what do we learn:

deep truths about God and life, how to love and minister to others, and also about ourselves.  Jesus doesn’t just want our service, or our head knowledge but our entirety, all of us.  Yet, we can have a tendency to hide from God.  We can hide behind so many things: success, accomplishments, our intellect, skills, possessions, image, relationships, our perfectionism, addictions, hobbies, busyness, comfort, our own righteousness or good deeds.  We not only hide from God but we hide from other people.  We put on masks and only let people see a certain part of us.  We even hide from ourselves.  We don’t want to see what is really going on inside of us: what we believe, what we feel, what we think, why we do what we do, what we desire, what we are living for, what we think of others, or how we try to fit in.  I suppose we hide because we are afraid or ashamed.  What would happen if we didn’t hide?  What if God saw us in all our shame, nakedness, and all of our sin?
